Description
Cypress trees have always had a special place in my heart - they are among the oldest types of trees and include the tallest and largest trees in the world, the coastal redwood and giant sequoia. The bald cypress tree found in Eastern NC swamps is a deciduous conifer that sheds it leaves in the fall and can grow up to 120 feet tall with a trunk 3-6 feet in diameter. It can live up to 600 years or more in age, and in fact, Black River in eastern NC has cypress trees more than 1,600 years old. One of the trees, named Methuselah, has been dated to 364 AD, meaning the 1,650 year old tree started growing during the height of the Roman Empire!
